What is the difference between the different 3-ply and single ply ropes and cords?
Single Ply is made of 1 big strand of rope (normally there are about 40 fine strands of fibres in the strand). It has a very soft and fluffy finish. It’s great on cushions and throws as the finished result is much softer than the ‘rope’ feel of 3-ply,
3-ply is more rope-like. It is made up of 3 different strands of rope all twisted together. It has a more rigid structure than single ply (but not super rigid or anything, just more rigid than untwisted).
Single ply is really brilliant if you are making very boho fringe finish pieces, or if you are making rainbows or feathers – or anything that needs to be brushed out at the end.
3-ply is more versatile in that you can create quite structured pieces. You can also brush it out to make more Boho pieces – once you are happy to spend the time brushing it all out! When it unfurls, it has a lovely crinkled wavy texture.
